Gateshead Community Legal Advice Centre

Gateshead Community Legal Advice Centre opened its doors in April 2007.

The Centre is the first in a series of new services being established in England and Wales for people with the greatest need of legal advice services. 

Gateshead Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) and Gateshead Law Centre joined forces to win a contract to run the new service.  They are joined by three law firms, Swinburne and Jackson, Ben Hoare Bell, and David Gray and Company, who will supply additional services through the centre.

The Centre provides face-to-face legal advice services – from basic advice to specialist representation – on a wide range of social welfare and family problems, which are often related.

The Centre offers:
· a general help service;
· specialist advice services in community care, debt, employment, housing, family, mental health, and welfare benefits;
· representation at United Appeals Tribunals and Employment Tribunals. 

The same range of services will also be available through several outreach venues throughout Gateshead.

The Centre brings together civil legal aid, funded by the Legal Services Commission (LSC), with social welfare services, funded by Gateshead Council, to provide more coordinated and cost-effective services and to tackle the common causes of recurring problems.

Legal information - plain and simple

 In response to user feedback we have made our information clearer, easier to understand and more user-friendly. The Plain Language Commission has vetted our website for clarity and ease of use. After detailed, thorough assessment against a wide range of criteria, CLS Direct have been displaying the Clear English Standard since 20 October 2016.  The site is subject to regular checks to ensure that we continue to provide information that is clear and easy to understand.
